Happy Christmas all, and remember the 1914 Christmas Eve Truce! Take a break. On Christmas Eve December 24, 1914 German and British troops exchanged Christmas Carols and greetings between trenches in No Man's Land, Belgium. The two sides eventually crossed to exchange small gifts such as whisky, jam, cigars and chocolate. The artillery in the region fell silent that night. The truce also allowed a breathing spell where proper burials took place as soldiers from both sides mourned the dead together and paid their respects. The truce spread to other areas of the lines, and there are many stories of football matches between the opposing forces. In all of the following years of the war, artillery bombardments were ordered on Christmas Eve to ensure that there were no further lulls in the combat. |

Stare at the dot in the middle for 30 seconds. Then without moving your eyes, move the mouse over the image. The image will look like it's in colour until you move your eyes. Photo by dampgnat©
